Too much sun can damage the skin, protect with Heliocare!
Sun-damage accumulates over time and it is a lifetime of sun exposure, rather than recent sunbathing that adds to your risk. Most of us enjoy sitting in the sunshine – and there is evidence that limited sunlight can be good for us, helping the body to make Vitamin D that keeps our bones healthy. But, like many things in life, too much of a good thing can sometimes be harmful. Too much sun can damage the skin, and this may only start to become apparent later in life.
Nobody is going to gad about every single day in the height of summer wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a wide-brimmed hat. Our winters are far too long and depressing for that. But a reasonable degree of precaution against sunburn and excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) solar radiation makes absolute sense. This is especially true for fair-skinned people and children, whose natural level of protection is reduced.
Over the years, sunlight exposure ages the skin leading to dryness, brown blotches and wrinkles. More importantly, UV radiation also promotes the development of skin cancer.
More of us are taking more frequent holidays in hotter climates and that is fine. But we cannot avoid the fact that any suntan at all is evidence of permanent skin damage, and UV radiation that penetrates the skin can damage cellular DNA, which, when it fails to self-repair, can become cancerous.
DNA damage initially brings about the sunburn reaction, slowly leading to tanning, due to the release of a brown pigment known as melanin, and some skin thickening. Together, this thickening and tanning offers some protection against UV damage, but only at the expense of the UV damage that begins and maintains that process. People with fair skins, freckles and red hair, who always burn and rarely tan, are therefore the ones who are most at risk.
So what can you do to reduce the hazards of sunshine if 90 per cent of cancers are preventable?
One way is to keep out of the sun in the middle of the day, as this is when the sun’s rays are strongest. You can also wear a hat that has a flap to protect the back of your neck and loose fitting long-sleeved clothing. Everyone here at Face the Future uses Heliocare products to protect their skin.
The damaging effects on our skin can be minimised by using adequate sun protection against both UVA and UVB radiation and these come in the form of topical and oral products.
FACE THE FUTURE FAVOURITES:
Heliocare Oral Supplement Capsules
These capsules contain Fernblock, which triples the skin’s resistance from the sun and protects areas on which it is impossible to apply a cream or gel like the hair and eyes for example. Taking just one capsule a day before sun exposure can help prevent sun damage and prickly heat.
Heliocare Gel SPF 50
This sun block is easily absorbed into the skin and is great even under make up. It protects against both UVA and UVB radiation so apply to the face and hands to protect from both the burning and ageing effect on the skin.
Heliocare Compact SPF 50
This factor 50 sun protection comes in the form of a compact in both Light and Brown, Oil Free and Normal. A firm favourite with women as its both sun protection and foundation in one. Its great to use on holiday when re-application is ideal, as it comes with a sponge and mirror for ease of applying throughout the day when out and about. Also available as an oil free compact – Heliocare Oil Free Compact SPF 50.
Visit the shop or call the clinic today on 0113 282 3300 for more information on Heliocare. Plus, don’t forget you can save money with our Heliocare Bundles!

The EndymedPro – NEW Treatment Coming Soon to Face the Future
As we age collagen fibres in the skin start to break down and become less structured and elastic. This results in unattractive lax or sagging skin, wrinkles or cellulite. Other factors such as sun damage and lifestyle choices, such as smoking and poor diet, can make this deterioration in collagen worse.
Radio Frequency can be the ideal non surgical treatment for sagging or lax skin as it can deliver energy and collagen stimulation, deep into the dermal layers, creating a skin tightening effect.
Previously Radio Frequency treatments have been difficult to manage, with the better systems often being to difficult and painful to tolerate and the less painful systems delivering disappointing results. The NEW Endymed Pro has changed this, with its unique 3DEEP delivery system, controlled and focused energy makes the treatment both comfortable and efficient. Significant clinical results are being achieved with both patient comfort and safety. A uniform and deep heat causes collagen fibres to contract and skin immediately feels tighter. This immediate effect is then followed by regeneration of new collagen and skin tissue, which naturally tightens over time providing a natural firming, tightening and lifting of the skin.
The treatment itself is comfortable, with a small hand piece gliding over the skin, almost like a hot stones massage. The skin heats up gently and feels comfortably warm. An individual treatment takes around 30 to 40 minutes. A lifting of the skin can often be seen at the end of the procedure but a course of treatments consisting of 6 sessions, 1 to 2 weeks apart, is usually recommended for optimum results. The visible tightening and lifting at the end of the course of treatments will often continue to improve as the collagen matures and tightens. The Endymed 3DEEP results are due to natural changes in the skin and as such are on going and long lasting.
The Endymed 3DEEP is coming to Face the Future Ltd in June 2012. Watch this space for an open evening in June, to launch this amazing new technology.

Milia
Milia are commonly found on the skin of people of all ages. They are formed when keratin (a substance produced by the skin) becomes trapped beneath the epidermal layer of skin, forming a tiny cyst. An individual milium is formed at the base of a hair follicle or sweat gland.
Milia appears as a 1-2mm white-to-yellow, dome-shaped bumps that are not generally painful or itchy. Milia can occur in people of all ages, of any ethnicity, and of either sex.
There are two types of milia; primary and secondary.
Primary milia are formed directly from trapped keratin and are usually found on the faces of infants and adults. Secondary milia are also tiny cysts and look similar, but these develop after something clogs the ducts leading to the surface, such as after an injury, burn or blistering of the skin.
The most common locations for primary milia include:
- Around the eyes, cheeks, nose, ad foreheads in adults and infants
- On the gums and palate inside the mouth of infants
The most common locations for secondary milia include:
- Anywhere on the body where another skin condition exists, particularly on the backs of the hands
- On the faces of people who have had a lot of damage from sun exposure.
There are a number of methods that can be used to treat milia and Face the Future are proud to offer all the proven treatments in one location, including:
Manual extraction: this involves making a tiny piercing in to the cyst and removing the blocked keratin.
Advanced Cosmetic Procedure treatments: this uses a tiny metal probe, and an intense heat over the whole area of the milium, to in effect soften the keratin, reducing the risk of scarring.
Danne Montague King Clinical facial treatment: Depending on the amount of milia, we must use the facial treatments to soften the skin making the extractions easier and quicker.
Most importantly we must use a series of home prescription products to prevent the build up of the keratin in the skins surface. In particular the use of a Vitamin A moisturiser, which offers the benefit of normalising the cell turnover, therefore reducing the layers of dead skin cells that trap the keratin.

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) May Special Offer
Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is a common disorder, which can cause significant distress to the sufferer. It can result in frequent changes of clothing, limit clothing choice and cause distress and anxiety. Treatments for hyperhidrosis have previously been limited but treatment with Botulinum Toxin is fast becoming the treatment of choice, with significant improvements being achieved.
Hyperhidrosis can be caused by some neurological or metabolic diseases but in most cases, it occurs in otherwise healthy people. There are some triggers such as stress and heat but generally people who suffer from hyperhidrosis sweat nearly all the time, regardless of external stresses.
Treatment with Botulinum Toxin can significantly reduce excess sweating. The Botulinum Toxin affects to the nerves that controls sweating in the skin, and reduces sweating in the area for 6-8 months, without compensatory sweating in other areas. Clinical studies have shown that this treatment can reduce the amount of sweating by 75 – 80%. Treatment normally lasts 6-8 months. In order to ensure you obtain the best results, only Botox or Dysport are used at strong therapeutic levels.
This treatment becomes very popular during the spring and summer months and for the month of May we are happy to offer bilateral underarm treatment at £399.

Tried and Tested – MyCells Update
Back in January we posted a blog from one of our first ever customers to have the MyCells treatment. Here’s the follow up response to that blog to see how our client found the treatment and the results! Take a look below:
–
Well as promised it is time to update you on the effects of the Mycells treatment I had at Face the Future back in January.
I experienced an initial tightening effect following treatment which I was told to expect, but that soon subsided, which I was also told to expect.
The results have been gradual, but I can certainly see and feel a difference. My lines especially around my eyes have a marked improvement, but it is the texture of my skin that has amazed me the most. It feels tighter, thicker (which has made my dark circles less noticeable) and firmer. For a treatment with little downtime, no risk of rejection and totally natural I would highly recommend it.
As a result of the changes I can see and feel I have already booked in for my second treatment. I am determined if I can hold back those years without fillers or surgery then that is the way forward for me. Why not book in for a consultation with Kate and find out more.

Does popcorn have more antioxidants than fruit and vegetables?
Popcorn is a perfect snack and does have more antioxidants than most fruit and vegetables, scientist claim.
The popular snack contains high levels of polyphenols. This is a type of antioxidant that helps prevent cellular damage by molecules called free radicals.
All fruit and vegetables have polyphenols, but are diluted in 90% of water. Where as in plain popcorn it is diluted in only 4% of water.
Popcorn may be the perfect snack but should not be a substitute for eating your fruit and vegetables in a healthy diet. When looking back in history we ate grains, fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat that made up our diets. Now with processed foods and fast food chains our diets are failing to give us the vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to stay healthy. Even in a health conscious diet we can still not get all the vitamins and minerals we need, so we may need to take supplements.
Supplements can give us many vitamins and minerals that are hard to get into your everyday diet. Taking DMK EFA’s is an excellent way to get all the nutrience that will give you the energy and a young, healthy glow to your skin working from the inside out. DMK EFA’s contain Seabuckthorn seed oil, and provides over 100 nutrients including Flavonoids and Polyphenols all of which give you healthier looking skin.
EFA’s are great if you are on the Danne skin range or not. It is an easy way to get beautiful looking skin and improve your health over all. We also have other nutritional supplements available in our clinic and online that can suit everyone’s nutritional needs especially those with diets lacking in Omega 3, a vitamin known to promote brain power, something which is particularly good for any age.
For information visit www.facethefuture.co.uk or call us in clinic on 01132 823300 and we will be happy to help.
If you are also looking into your diet in more depth you may be interested in the nutritional Food Allergy Test by York Laboratories this can also be found in our online shop.

What is Glycosylation / Glycation?
What is Glycosylation / Glycation?
Proteins are valuable biological molecules, which are found in almost every part of your body and have a variety of functions. They are present inside the cells making the life of the cell possible. Without them you would not survive as these proteins are needed to carry oxygen and nutrients to the tissues.
Proteins are made up of strings of different amino acids. To function properly they need to be remain as singular molecules move around and to perform their tasks.
However proteins have enemies that they are exposed to every day. These enemies are in the form of glucose molecules, sugars and similar chemicals known as aldehydes. All these molecules can be referred to loosely as glycating agents. The glycating agents try to attach themselves to the proteins, and when they succeed this starts a dangerous situation.
When the glycating agents attaches itself to a protein molecule the combined molecule is a bit like a particle floating around with some super glue stuck to it.
If that bit of glue comes into contact with another protein then that combined molecule may then attach itself to another protein molecule in a process called linking. So now instead of having two good proteins to help the overall health of your body and prevent premature ageing, you now have what is referred to as AGE – advanced glycation end products.
The AGEs move around the body binding to cells and causing them to produce a number of poisonous chemicals plus other toxic by-products. AGEs also increase the formation of amyloid beta which is a toxic material found in the brains of older people and abundant in Alzheimers and dementia patients. As they multiply, these molecules cause havoc with adjacent proteins including collagen and elastin which keep our skin firm and elastic.
As well, AGEs stimulate the production of free radicals which in turn can create more aldehydes which in turn stimulates more glycation.
How can you prevent it?
- Trying to minimise intake of glycating foods- simple carbohydrates and sugars
- By inactivating the aldehydes before they attach themselves to protein
- By preventing the protein which has already got ‘glue’ on it from sticking to another protein.
How would you treat this skin problem at Face the Future?
The most successful method of treating this problem would be to use a combination of Danne Montague King in clinic treatments and the home prescriptive products. The treatments and products used in conjunction will help to repair the cells, and protect against further progression of glycation.
To book for a free skin consultation to find out more about the treatment, please contact reception on 0113 282 3300.

Diary of the Obagi Nu-Derm System for Age Management
One of our clients has been kind enough to keep a diary of her 18 week program on the Obagi Nu-Derm system. It gives a great insight for anyone looking at using the system for age management / anti-ageing, take a look below:
My Obagi Diary
Day 1
Well this is it, at 55 years of age, and after years of being disappointed with how my skin looks, I am so excited as I have had my consultation and instructions for using the Obagi Nu-Derm system, so tonight’s the night.
Well, it has never taken me so long to get ready for bed! Glasses on, read instructions, glasses off use product. Glasses on again, next step, glasses off use product. Need I go on; I think you get my drift. Like anything else I will get into a routine and it will seem second nature, but I want to make sure I get it right from the start, no half measures.
Day 2
I think I am going to try a little earlier tonight rather than waiting till I’m tired and ready for bed. 9pm and I am taking my make up off. Must say the routine seemed a little quicker today and I getting more confident with the products.
Day 3
My cheeks are feeling quite warm and are a little red, a bit like I’m blushing. I am finding the cleanser really nice to use and makes my skin feel really clean and effectively removes eye make up as well. So far so good, and using it earlier in the evening worked well.
Day 4
Cheeks still warm and a bit pink, but no other symptoms. I have never looked in the mirror as much.
Day 5
A little bit of dry skin around mouth and nose, but nothing much happening yet. I am wishing to see something more dramatic but am assured to make the most of this period of calm….
Day 6
The only product I have been struggling with is the Obagi Healthy Skin Protector, I found that it “rolled off” my skin as I rubbed it in. I have decided to try using less tomorrow to see how it goes.
Week 2
First week over only 17 to go. Skin feels good not a lot of difference yet. I was using Environ AVST 4 moisturiser prior to this so was wondering if this has increased my tolerance to vitamin A. I am enjoying using the Obagi Nu-Derm and certainly using less of the sun protector is better. I think the products are so concentrated so less is more!
Week 3
Starting week 3 and not a lot has changed since last week. Not had any peeling or dryness as yet. The routine now seems like second nature it’s so easy, I wonder why it took so long when I first started. I have been looking on the internet and most people on the Nu-Derm system seem to experience extreme dryness, tightness and flaking but as yet I haven’t experienced anything like this.
Week 4
This week, although not tight, my skin does feel ready for cleansing when the evening comes around. I have already had a couple of compliments on how my skin looks and I can definitely see a difference. Although I haven’t had any peeling my skin is obviously renewing itself and re-balancing as although I previously had dry dehydrated skin, and this regime has no moisturiser in it, I don’t feel dry or tight.
Weeks 5, 6 and 7
Not much change from week 4.
Week 8
Wow, how things have changed. Skin is quite dry around the mouth and chin area. I am peeling well! I have also had some complements as to how good my skin is looking and I notice that without make-up it is much more even. I also think I have been using too much product and have reduced the amount to a pea size. I have also started putting Vaseline around nostrils and corner of mouth, as these were the areas that tended to split.
Weeks 9, 10 and 11
My skin has remained pretty constant during this time. Had days of flaking and dryness, it feels a bit like skin dandruff. I think I have been lucky as this has been the worst side effect so far for me. I have had no soreness at all and no overwhelming desire to use a moisturiser.
Week 12
I have had to replace the Obagi Nu-Derm Clear, and I’ve run out of Healthy Skin Protector (which I am pleased about). I am now using Heliocare SPF 50 Gel, which is great, as my sun block and bought another Clear.
Week 18
Well this is it, how does my skin look. GREAT…. is the answer. Skin tone is even, no open pores, wrinkles seem less pronounced and the skin looks luminous. Had compliments about how good it looks, and from people I know mean it. I have decided to carry on for a bit longer and have increased the strength of Tretinoin (Vitamin A) which has brought on a bit more peeling.
IN SUMMARY:
Looking back over the past 5 months, the routine has seemed a little tiresome at times, but I have always followed it to the letter, especially as the results began to show. It has made me appreciate my skin more now it is in fantastic condition. I will never go out again without a quality sun block, and certainly no baking in the midday heat abroad wearing factor 8. I wear the tiniest amount of foundation and no concealer anymore and my skin looks healthy. I have tried all sorts of lotions and potions over the years, which promised the Earth (and most of them cost it as well) but this is the only regime, which has lived up to my expectations. I was well briefed of any side effects before starting, and felt well supported throughout, any questions were quickly answered by Kate at Face the Future, and I would recommend anyone thinking about it to book in for a free consultation and see if it is right for you.
It was for me and I will always be grateful.
